On the 31st of January I attended a course at Redwither towers. It was a falls prevention course ran by Jo Davies-the BCUHB clinical falls lead. The aim of the course was to increase my knowledge and to be able to improve the well-being and safety of the people I support by recognising factors which can lead to a fall.
What I learnt was that hearing can have a huge impact on balance. Hearing loss is experienced by 50% of those over 60 years old, and 70% over 70 years old. Hearing loss can reduce your awareness of your surroundings and environment. Your eyesight can also impact your balance. Blurred vision can cause you to bump into objects/furniture which increases your risk of falling.
Things to consider to assist yourself at home could be keeping a clutter free living space, keep walk ways clear and have better lighting in the home. If you have any worries or concerns please visit your GP. I am also available should you wish to discuss any of the above.
